Segmenting an intelligent home network

A practical pattern for separating trusted devices, cameras, IoT equipment and guests, the foundation every intelligent home needs.

A home does not become intelligent just because it contains connected devices. If anything, every new device widens the attack surface. Before adding AI, we start with the network.

A starting pattern

  • Trusted: personal computers, phones and the AI core.
  • Infrastructure: switches, access points and management interfaces, reachable only from an admin segment.
  • Cameras: isolated, with no direct internet access, recording to local storage.
  • IoT: sensors, plugs and appliances, allowed to talk only to the automation broker.
  • Guests: internet access only, no visibility of anything else.

Default deny between segments

Firewall policy between segments should start from 'deny' and open only the specific flows each service needs, such as sensors publishing to an MQTT broker or the AI core reading camera events. This turns a compromise of one cheap device into a contained incident rather than a household-wide one.

Remote access, deliberately

Port-forwarding a camera or dashboard to the internet is still one of the most common home-network mistakes. Prefer an authenticated VPN or an equivalent zero-trust approach, enabled deliberately and monitored.

No network is unhackable. Segmentation is about reducing risk and limiting blast radius, and it needs ongoing maintenance, monitoring and updates.
